Daunte Wright - Say His Name

🕊 Name: Daunte Wright
📅 Date of Death: April 11, 2021
🎂 Age: 20
📍 Location: Brooklyn Center, Minnesota

Who Was Daunte Wright?

Daunte Wright was a 20-year-old father, son, and beloved friend. He was known for his bright smile, caring personality, and dreams of building a better future for his young son. Daunte had a passion for life and was deeply loved by his family and community. His life was just beginning, but it was tragically cut short in a preventable act of violence.

What Happened to Daunte?

On April 11, 2021, Daunte was pulled over by Brooklyn Center police for a minor traffic violation. During the stop, officers attempted to arrest him for an outstanding warrant. In the chaos, Officer Kim Potter claimed she mistakenly pulled her firearm instead of her Taser, firing a single, fatal shot. Daunte drove a short distance before crashing his vehicle. He died at the scene.

His killing happened just miles away from where George Floyd was murdered less than a year earlier. Once again, the world watched in outrage as another Black man lost his life due to excessive force by law enforcement.

The Aftermath & The Fight for Justice

Daunte’s death sparked protests and demands for accountability. His family and community grieved publicly, calling for justice and police reform. In December 2021, Kim Potter was convicted of first-degree and second-degree manslaughter, receiving a two-year prison sentence—a punishment many saw as inadequate given the life lost.

Daunte’s story is a painful reminder of the systemic issues within policing and the urgent need for change. His life mattered, and his name must not be forgotten.

A Movement Was Strengthened

Daunte’s name became a symbol of the ongoing fight against police violence. His family, activists, and communities around the world continue to push for legislative changes, including ending traffic stops for minor violations and increasing accountability for law enforcement officers.

🕊 Rest in Power, Daunte. We will never stop saying your name. 🖤
